The company that I have been working for in my last semester of college has offered me a full time position come May.. Salary, benefits, the whole nine yards. The idea was proposed to me on Thursday of last week.
I replied that I was interested but needed some time to consider my options. They were fine with that response and we left it at that. When I walked in Monday morning, immediately following “Good Morning”, was “Have you made your decision yet?”. I stared at him blindly, and managed to stumble out something like ‘Ummm no, I wasn’t aware this had to be an immediate response’. At which point I was asked to have one by Friday.
<insert freaking out here>
So now I am left to make a slightly life altering decision by Friday, which is in, oh 2 days! As I’ve mentioned before, I have some other offers on the table. And well here they are:
-Local 1 Union Stagehand (I’d be a wrench slinger for a little while, which is something I’m not interested in long term, however this would be the fastest way to pay off my tens of thousands of student loan debt, also it would provide a long term job pool)
- The lighting design firm I work for currently( I love this company, and all of the people in it. Its a truly great place to work. However, its been made clear to me that, they won’t be able to come anywhere near the price range my first option can. Meaning its going to increase the amount of time it takes to pay off afformentioned loans. Also I think I would be able to return to this company later, option 1 is a one shot deal)
- And finally the ”Once in a lifetime shot” I mentioned previously is a European tour with this dance company that I’ve been working with on weekends. (This is not a permanent job, it doesn’t really offer stability. But, who doesn’t want a chance at an all expenses paid, plus getting paid month+ long trip to Europe???)
My thoughts on all of this, is that I would like to have financial stability As.Soon.As. Possible. And having that would make me a lot less stressful. So I think attaining that is a priority. That being said, its not certain how soon after graduation the apprenticeship will come up. So I don’t want to turn this offer down, only to have no job come May 17th. However I don’ t want to accept the offer, and then two weeks after graduation have the union call and have to turn in my two weeks notice….

Til I am officially a college graduate. Its all very scary yet very exciting. And to be honest I never really thought that I would be in the position that I am finding myself in. Too many options for after graduation. Its a unfortunately, fortunate position to find yourself in as a 21 year old fresh out of school. I really have 3 very real, very viable options. All of which I love and I wish there was a way that I could do all of them.1 of them is a once in a lifetime chance. The other 2 aren’t neccessarily once in a lifetime, but still whichever I choose has the opportunity to affect at least the next 2-3 years of my life in not a little longer. I never really thought I would have too many options. For awhile I didn’t think I’d have one. Oy.

Today at work, we have no lights, no water, no printer, and no stamina.
Love taking risks. Don’t you?
So my survival of fashion week, was minimal. Frankly, it.kicked.my.ass. That having been said, it was a great experience, and really my first uber professional entrance into this industry. It was a good learning experience. And it definitely helped my abilities as a Production Manager, and a Lighting Director. New England was eh. good crews in New Hampshire. Meh, not great, down home guy in Maine. But it all worked out, I’m back in New York, I’ll be in Vermont with them next weekend, and then Connecticut. And maybe, perhaps, possibly, a little bit, sorta, hopefully, if-ily, on a month long European tour with them in the fall. But thats so up in the air, it might as well be in orbit. I made it to beautiful balmy Bangor, ME this morning. Bangor welcomed me with 16deg temp, ice/snow covered roads. And a cute little brand spankin’ new, KIA Spectra rental car. I made it to Camden, ME where the gig that I am working is at, in about an hour 15 mins.And I fell in love with this town. Its gorgeous and quaint and looks so stuck in old world charm. They are having a Toboggan National Championship this weekend here. And while I won’t be here this year to witness it. I plan on being here for it next year.

Maybe I’ll even compete. And tonight, oh tonight I am spending one glorious night at the Lord Camden Inn. And I could live here. The beds are the most wonderful thing I’ve ever sat on (however that could be the 16 hour day talking.. Who knows) I suggest a visit. I can see the ocean out my private balcony. And seriously its so affordable. The room was 79$ for the night, all ammenities included. I’m hooked.

I would like to join some form of club or class, or something. Cooking I believe. I really would love to start a cooking club, that travels from house to house once a week or every other week…..
